Google Analytics

This week, I would like to discuss the concept of Google Analytics.  Google Analytics is a service that is operated by Google that generates and provides detailed data from a website.  It monitors traffic and conversions on a website as well.  For example, you could use Google analytics to see what is the most popular page on your website and how many people have visited this page.

This more I learn about Google analytics, the more I am just fascinated with it.  It is interesting to me because you get to see all of this data that you would have never thought about before when it comes to visitors on your website.  You can see this data, and make changes to improve every aspect of the site. The website can be continuously updated and improved based off the data you are receiving from Google Analytics.  In my MSM capstone class, we are currently working with a client to increase their website traffic and their conversion and bounce rates.  Google Analytics has already shown us many ways this organization can improve and what they need to focus on.

For this class, we had to watch the Google video on Google Analytics and it primarily covered cookies.  Cookies are very confusing to me, it was very insightful, however I would have liked to learn more about the data you receive through Google analytics, how to interpret it, and then what actions to take to improve the website.  The dashboard is extremely easy to use, and is pretty self explanatory, but I want to be sure that I am getting as much out of this tool as I possibly can.  If anyone has used and understands Google Analytics and the benefits you’ve had, please share some of your experiences!

  1. Holly -- I really appreciated your post for this week. I agree completely with your fascination of Google Analytics. Before this class I really only thought that Google was used for "googling" things and perhaps the occasional email. I also feel really confused by Cookies and will be checking back on here to see if anyone else has had some previous experience with Google Analytics because I too want to be sure that I am using these Google tools to their fullest!

    1. Hi Dani and Holly, cookies are small text files deposited on your computer whenever you visit a website that needs to track your activity over time. For example, when you use email online, they need to use a small cookie file to remember your username and password temporarily so they don't ask you to log in every single time. Cookies are like short-term memory. Without them, websites like Amazon.com would act like it has Alzheimer's and has to ask you for your name every 2 minutes!

  2. Hello Holly,

really glad that you sharing the Google Analytics with us. I've taken the Google Analytics online course for 3 weeks through Google, I thought it was hard when it comes to numerous data, and we have to use it to analyze the visitors' preference and actions.

but now, I am glad that we have such these amazing tools that helps us to be better user of the Internet. It make our work more easier, just like you said we can make changes to improve every aspect of the site via these data.

  3. Hi Holly I'm glad you like Google Analytics - we're going to dive into it and learn more!!! With your post, you should discuss two concepts, one skill, and your personal reflection. You should also ask a few questions that others can respond to.
